5 stages have been identified in the recovery process:
The first stage
The "moratorium" is characterized by denial, confusion, despair and withdrawal.
The second stage
The "consciousness" marks the advent of a first glimmer of hope for a better life and the possibility of recovery. This phase also corresponds to the development of awareness of the disease
The third stage
The "preparation" consists in making the difficult, but primordial, distinction between "being schizophrenic" and "having schizophrenia." For the patient, it is thus a question of being able to distinguish certain psychological manifestations attributable to schizophrenia and of being able to become aware of his own values, strengths and weaknesses.
The fourth stage
The "rebuilding" is when the patient reconstructs a positive identity and establishes life goals.
The patient clearly defines himself as an "actor" in his therapeutic care.
The Fifth stage
The "growth" process is the ability to recognize one's resources, to manage one's illness, and to maintain an optimistic view of the future, even if there may still be symptomatic manifestations. Beyond this ability to control his symptoms, the subject feels positively transformed by the disease, as if it had taught him something about himself.
