Main Side Effects

It is important to know the list of the main side effects of treatments given in schizophrenia so that you can talk to your doctor if one of these symptoms appears and adapt the treatment with him (2,4,5,6).

1/ Psychic effects:
- Emotional indifference, apathy, psychic inertia, social withdrawal, decreased initiative.
- Drowsiness during the day.
- Confusional states.
- Depressive effect.

2/ Neurological effects:
- Early extra-pyramidal effects "acute dyskinesia": involuntary and uncontrollable tonic contraction; located in certain muscle groups (e.g. jaw, neck, or torso).
- Eyeball: oculogyric seizure with gaze capping and head extension, eye revulsion.
- Bucco-lingual area: difficulty opening the mouth, difficulty swallowing and excess saliva and protrusion of the tongue.

- Sometimes; simple chewing and sucking movements.
- Slowness of movement, shakiness and rigidity
- Impatience: stomping of the legs, feeling of permanent movement in the legs
- Late extrapyramidal effects "tardive dyskinesia": Involuntary movements of the oral-linguo-masticatory region of the trunk "chewing, chewing, grimacing, blowing.

3/ Metabolic and neuroendocrine effects:
- Menstrual cycle disorders: dysmenorrhea or amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). Galactorrhea (milk flow)
- Gynecomastia (enlargement of the breasts)
- Sexual disorders "impotence, decreased libido, anorgasmia... »
- Weight gain
- Carbohydrate tolerance disorders
- Cholesterol disorders

4/ Neurovegetative effects:
- Dry mouth,
- Difficulty urinating or even urinary retention
- Vision problems
- Discomfort when transitioning from sitting to standing

5/ Digestive complications:
- Nausea and vomiting
-Constipation
