Treatments for schizophrenia are called neuroleptics or antipsychotics. Antipsychotics work on hallucinations, bizarre thoughts, and thought disorganization and negative symptoms.
Antipsychotics act on the brain's Dopamine receptors.
Antipsychotic treatment works on the symptoms of schizophrenia during the crisis (when the symptoms are very severe) to reduce or eliminate them and after the attack (when the symptoms are less severe or have disappeared) to prevent the symptoms from recurring (relapse).
